My Message to the USDA -
Just under today's deadline for public comment about the latest Dietary Guidelines proposal, I submitted my comment, and I thought I'd share it with you:
I am a journalist who has been writing about healthy reduced-carbohydrate diets for six years. Over that time, I have received correspondence from many hundreds of people whose health has been improved using this approach. Complications from diabetes reversed, blood pressure normalized, weight lost, triglycerides plummeting - these are all very very common and are only the most obvious health improvements people can find from reducing the amount of carbohydrate in their diets.

Little Things are Adding Up - I've been writing about low-carb diets for over 6 years now, and never have more people in my personal life been talking about low-carb eating - not even during the "low-carb craze" of a few years ago. This morning in my exercise class, the women were talking about how toast actually has sugar in it! And potatoes! And how cutting out those foods that have sugar really help you lose weight! Woohoo!
Also, three different friends have contacted me within the past couple of months to say that they are trying a low-carb diet. One said that her husband was having blood pressure problems, but that within two weeks we was able to dramatically reduce his medication. "It's like a miracle!", she said.
What can I say but, "I know!" It IS like a miracle for so many who are reversing complications of diabetes, losing weight, curing their heartburn, easing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, and so much more. I'm just hoping that all these little signs mean we may be reaching a critical mass out there when it comes to making the miracle more well-known.

Andrew Weil: Carbs Bad, Saturated Fats OK - You know, I can talk about the problems with too much carbohydrate, cite the many scientific studies, talk about how promoting a low-fat diet is problematic - I can do all this until the cows come home, and very few people are going to pay any attention at all. Even among my readers, my writing about science is not very popular. But when Andrew Weil says it, let's face it: more people are going to sit up and take notice. So I was literally cheering when I read this piece in the Huffington Post: Read Full Post Andrew Weil: Carbs Bad, Saturated Fats OK originally appeared on About.com Low Carb Diets on Sunday, July 4th, 2010 at 17:59:49.
